Healthcare Advocacy For Women of Color

Project Overview

Designed an app specifically for BIPOC women in their healthcare advocacy journey, addressing the lack of representation and support for this community. The app provides a safe and supportive community to voice health experiences and connect with others.

Timeline

Over 16 weeks - I started by conducting market research and analyzing the customer segments, business model, and minimum viable product. I then conducted interviews and desk research, moving on to ideation. Finally, I took several steps in wire-framing and finished with a  prototype.

Problem to Solution

My goal was to address the lack of representation and support for BIPOC women in healthcare advocacy by designing an app that provides a safe and supportive community to voice health experiences and connect with others. I aimed to improve healthcare outcomes, reduce health disparities, and overcome the systemic barriers that this community faces in accessing quality healthcare.

Target Audience

Our target audience is BIPOC women who face unique obstacles in accessing quality healthcare.

Market Research

Through market research, I found that the primary audience for our app would be BIPOC women in the United States who face obstacles in accessing quality healthcare. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, people of color make up about 40% of the U.S. population, which will increase in the coming years. With this demographic shift, there will be an increasing need for healthcare advocacy and support for Women of Color.

Interview Research

To better understand the experiences of women of color in their healthcare journey, I conducted in-depth interviews with 7 individuals from this community.

Through these conversations, I gained valuable insights into the challenges and obstacles they face when accessing healthcare, as well as their needs and preferences in a healthcare advocacy platform.

Concept Evolution

Before arriving at my final concept, I explored various ideas to determine the pathway that people needed. My initial concept was to focus on four groups, Experts, Over-comers, Supports, and Seekers. Experts would have the knowledge, Supports would be caregivers in some form, Seekers would be looking to gain information, and Over-comers would be those who had gone through it.

However, after conducting research and interviewing women of color, I realized that a more holistic approach was necessary. I came up with the final concept of an app that provided four key features: Resources, Community, Connection, and Assistance. Resources include articles and resources to help women better understand their bodies and stay informed about their health. Community provides a platform for connecting with like-minded women for support. Connection enables users to discover healthcare providers who provide quality care that respects their cultural identity and background. Finally, Assistance provides personalized support every step of the way.

Visual Design

Login Screens
- This screen allows users to securely access their account and data. It can help protect their information and personalize their experience across devices.

Onboarding
- These screens introduce users to your app and help them understand what it does. They can increase engagement and comfort with the app.

Desktop Application
- Desktop apps offer larger screens and more power, which can be useful for older users. They can also provide a more immersive experience.

Challenges

Some challenges I faced during the project included:
  • Making the Desktop and App Design for both users age groups

  • Understanding the unique needs of Woman of Color, from other backgrounds other than my own

  • Balancing design and development time

Reflection

Through completing this project, I learned the importance of user-centered design in creating an app that truly meets the needs of its intended audience.

  • Accessibility and Inclusivity are critical in healthcare

  • Support and Community are Key

  • Empowerment and Education are Essential

Voice is a community and compassionate app that seeks to empower and support Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) women in their healthcare journey.
This app offers a wealth of resources and information to help women better understand their bodies and make informed decisions about their health.

With the community feature, users can connect with others who understand what they're going through and find support.I prioritize inclusivity and accessibility in my user-centered design, ensuring that everyone can benefit from our app. Given the systemic racism, bias, and discrimination that still exists in the healthcare system, Voice is an important tool for advocating and empowering BIPOC women in their healthcare journey.
